The graduate program in art education offers five degrees, three at the master’s level and two at the doctoral level. At the doctoral level, the programs offered are the Ph.D. in Art Education and the dual degree Ph.D. in Art Education and Women’s Studies.
At the master’s level, degrees include the M.S. in Art Education, the M.Ed. in Art Education, and the dual degree M.S. in Art Education and Women’s Studies. M.S. in Art Education candidates articulate with a thesis. M.S. graduates typically plan to continue toward a doctorate degree in art education. The M.Ed. in Art Education degree is for post-baccalaureates—in art, art history, and other disciplines—who desire public school art teacher certification. M.Ed. students take several undergraduate courses required for teacher certification, as well as complete a minimum of 30 semester hours of credit at the graduate level. The M.Ed. is also for those whose career direction involves creating visual exhibitions in public spaces, including the Internet, or a project that may be documentation of art education practice at a specific site.
